Use-Lab GUI design

GUI design

Today, software is part and parcel of many medical technical products. To control them safely and efficiently, an intuitively operable graphical user interface is essential – for instance, on high-resolution touch screens. Usability of the medical device therefore depends on the sophisticated design of user interfaces.

Our offers in GUI development include:

  • Usable design process
  • Analysis of scenarios for use
  • Functional and contextual analysis and specification
  • Design concept
    • Graphical concept
    • Operating concept
    • Information architecture
    • Navigation concept
  • Detailed design
    • Visual detailed design, aesthetics, design
    • Detailed design of interaction design
    • (Interactive) software prototyping
  • Development-based documentation (style guide, design history file)

Typical procedure

The GUI design kicks off immediately after analysis and specification of the operating requirements. The design of the graphical user interface at Use-Lab is subdivided into two phases – in between which the project-related usability verification of the software is usually carried out.

First, we develop the interface concept. Here, contextual, structural and design aspects are brought together. From this concept, we then derive as many design variants of user interfaces as possible. In close consultation with the client and on the basis of the results gained from the usability verification, we then select the most promising variant.

The second phase comprises the detailed design of the previously favored creation. We often work closely together with our clients’ design teams. The phase ends in the production of an interactive prototype of the user interface for usability validation – for instance, in a flash simulation. The actual programming is then usually carried out by the manufacturer.

Standard-compliant development

The standard-compliant and efficient development of medical software is specified in Standard IEC 62304. This process is also reflected in the usability engineering process at Use-Lab: We support our clients in individual subprojects or in the entire development cycle of interfaces for medical devices.
